Information for parents and students

While the Senior Secondary program at Carnamah District High School focusses on delivering a high quality face to face program of General and Foundation courses in conjunction with School Based Traineeships, Workplace Learning and online Certificate II courses, there may be opportunities for students to use SIDE to follow an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) pathway, or to supplement their General courses with ATAR courses.

Students who wish to take up ATAR courses are likely to be those who wish to pursue tertiary study, or who require certain courses as pre-requisistes for other post-school opportunities.  To be considered for ATAR courses, students will be required to complete a Course Counselling session to discuss their options.  They will also need to demonstrate the necessary skills and capacity to manage the demands of an ATAR workload, including:

  • Excellent self-management skills
  • Proficient time management skills
  • Above satisfactory grades in Year 10
  • Consistent completion of homework
  • Regular school attendance (above 90%)

Each application to complete an ATAR course or full ATAR pathway will be considered on a case-by-case basis, with the Principal and Deputy Principals making the final decision based on the best interests of the student and their capacity to successfully undertake the course.

ATAR courses available via School of Isolated and Distance Education (SIDE):

  • The Arts: Media Production and Analysis
  • English: English, Literature
  • Humanities and Social Sciences: Economics; Geography; Modern History; Politics and Law
  • Mathematics: Mathematics Applications, Mathematics Methods, Mathematics Specialist
